Youth Services
Established in August 1974, Coosa Valley Juvenile Detention Center has been established as a regional detention program, currently holding juveniles who are court ordered from our seven member counties: Calhoun, Etowah, Marshall, Talladega, Dekalb, St. Clair and Cherokee.
As well as our four non member per diem counties: Blount, Cleburne, Jackson and Walker.

Program Summary
The CVYS Juvenile Detention Center provides secure, short-term care for youth ages 10 to 18, who are held under court order while awaiting adjudication or placement in a treatment program. Lengths of stay range from less than 24 hours to approximately two months, depending on the case.
In accordance with Alabama law, youth 16 and older charged with certain major offenses are not held in juvenile facilities. All youth in CVYS detention are under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court.
Licensed and inspected by the Alabama Department of Youth Services (DYS), the center offers:
- Individual and group counseling
- An in-house academic program
- On-site medical care
- A behavioral token economy system
- Guest presentations from local organizations such as:
- The Agency for Substance Abuse
- AIDS Services Center
- Free-By-Choice
- Junior League volunteers and faith-based partners
These services are designed to create a structured, rehabilitative environment that gives youth an opportunity to reflect, grow, and redirect before entering the adult system.
